Top 5 Tips for Relocating

You have decided to relocate. Perhaps you are beginning a new job, are moving up the property ladder or simply downsizing to better enjoy your retirement.  Whatever the reason, it is essential that you research your new location well in advance of your move in order to really visualise what life in your new community will be like and to avoid any nasty surprises!

Here are 5 Top Tips to Consider when Relocating

Safety First

When relocating, it helps to know that your new neighbourhood is safe.  Indicators such as high household insurance rates in an area should set alarm bells ringing.  For peace of mind, you should contact local authorities and the local police to enquire about crime rates in the area.

Schooling your Brood

Parents will need to do their homework on suitable schools for their children.  Does your new area fall within a specific catchment area for certain schools?  Do the schools available within the new location meet your family’s needs in terms of school type, educational standards and extra curricular activities?  Will the school of your choice have availability of places?

Getting Around

You will need to work out how you will get to work or to school.  Are there accessible public transport and/or road links?  Can your new area meet your needs as an individual or family in order that your lives will function smoothly?

What’s on?

Take time before a move to acquaint yourself with the new community.  Look at the local council or county websites and pick up a local newspaper or magazine to see what freetime and leisure activities will be available to you.  Research opportunities for sports, eating out, pubs and clubs, arts and culture and family friendly places – whatever floats your boat!  Make sure to visit your new locale at night as well as during the day to get a true perspective of the character of the place.

Meet your Neighbours

Get the inside track into life in your new community by speaking to locals of the area or prospective neighbours.  Their insights could be invaluable.

Happy house hunting!
