The Countdown to Moving House - What to do One Day Before Moving to a New Home

If it’s possible you should finish all your packing the day before the big move.

That means packing those big items which you have avoided while boxing up non-essential items in the run-up to house moving day. We are talking about washing machines, cookers, televisions, tumble dryers, dishwashers and computers.

When packing such items it’s a good idea to label cables and to bag sets of cables so you will quickly know what goes with what once you unpack. And you should do the same with remote controls.

Use stabilising brackets if they were originally supplied with any of your equipment. Washing machines, TVs, microwaves and computers usually come with these.

If you have flat pack cupboards you should seriously consider dismantling them. These type of cupboards can fall apart if they are moved too much, so why take that risk.

Food is another consideration. You don’t want to be cooking at this stage, so make up filled rolls/sandwiches or splash out on an eve-of-move takeaway, on disposable plates, to avoid last minute washing up.

Another good idea is to put together an emergency box containing essential toiletries, snacks and even clothing. And leave some toiletries in the bathroom which you can use right up until the move.

Once you have packaged everything up you should mark where it will be positioned in your new home. In that way, whether you are moving it yourself or using a removal company, you will be able to unpack it with a minimum of fuss. There’s nothing worse than arriving at a new home to discover the washing machine is in the living room or the dishwasher is in a bedroom.

Top tips for what to do on the day you move to a new home will follow shortly.
