The countdown to moving house - What to do one week before moving to a new home

This is the time when you should start to finish off all your packing. The big move is, after all, only seven days away.

Defrost and clean your fridge and your freezer in preparation for moving day. Run down all food stocks, including excess dry goods, and throw away any out-of-date items.

If you’re taking the washing machine to your new home then do as much laundry as possible – packing away the clean clothes when they are dry – before disconnecting the appliance in good time for its removal.

By the eve of moving day you should have all major appliances boxed up and ready for loading in to a removals van or whatever transportation you have organised.

It also makes sense at this stage to pack away any clothes and other items you will not be using during the final week before the move.

When it comes to transporting valuables, such as jewellery and family heirlooms, you should consider purchasing a special box that you can keep locked in your own vehicle between moves.

If you want to use some items right up until the last minute, such as your TV, you should set aside ‘last load’ boxes that can be filled quickly.

For those with kids it’s a good idea to get them involved in the packing process. Explain why everything has to go into boxes, and if they have lived in their current home for some time and have made lots of friends then give them plenty of time to say goodbye.

At this stage it’s also essential that you confirm any childcare arrangements for moving day.

Top tips for what to do one day before moving to a new home will follow shortly.
