Moving house is listed as one of the most stressful things to do besides a death in the family and divorce. Follow these helpful hints to try and ease the strain:
The first thing to do when moving to a new home is to get rid of all the junk you have gathered up down the years in your previous abode.
You must be ruthless. Get rid of all those old papers, magazines and useless gadgets that amount to clutter and nothing else. And if you have kids it’s a great time to get rid of toys they no longer play with. You could even have a garage sale to earn a few extra bob.
From there you should think about getting your friends and family involved. Tempt them with some fine nosh or a decent bottle of plonk for helping you to move. After all, many hands make light work.
It’s not a good idea, however, to pop open the bubbly while they are helping you to pack up your things. That could be a recipe for disaster. Remember and label the boxes with the content stored inside – it makes for an easier, organised job at the other end!
When it comes to moving your stuff, it’s wise to rent a decent-sized truck. One trip, especially if long distances are involved, is so much better than a series of trips.
Once you arrive at your new home carry all the boxes and furniture in, but don’t try to unpack everything at once. Start with placing key bits of furniture, such as beds and sofas. You’ll probably be glad of your bed in particular if you have had a long, tiring day getting everything sorted.
Perhaps the most important thing when undertaking a house move is tackling the task with a positive attitude. Just keep saying to yourself that the move is good and you’ll do OK.
